Bonus Egg

Only about 30% of barred owl families produce as many as three owlets, and Ward and June are again trying to join that exclusive club. While June did not leave the nest all night, she did fly out to join Ward just a few minutes before sunrise. They could both be heard hooting in the distance until June returned (bottom picture) to resume her incubating. She was away from the eggs for less than five minutes. With ideal hunting weather, Ward managed to make his two food deliveries before nine o'clock last night. This is a sure sign that he is now a mature and highly skilled hunter who knows his territory. He called home just after noon today and June answered enthusiastically before going back to sleep. She is now highly relaxed in the nest and completely ignores the stream of smaller birds that stop by to scold her during the day.
