Two Eggs

Six days after laying the second egg, June finally climbed up into the door to reveal that it will be a two-egg year. She spent about five minutes in the doorway checking out a deer that was under the nest eating the early-spring growth that is just starting to emerge from the forest floor. After satisfying herself that the deer posed no threat, she climbed back down into the nest and settled in for the rest of the day. She left the nest only once last night and was out for less than five minutes, even though Ward again made no direct food deliveries to the nest. I'm quite surprised that she is not complaining by calling to Ward in the daytime, but she continues to look content and must somehow be getting enough to eat on these brief excursions from the nest.. In previous years, Ward has averaged about three food deliveries per night.
