June
is hunting at last and the owlets are finally getting all the food they
can eat. She is, however, still reluctant to leave them alone for long
periods and is shown here on one of several visits she makes each hour to
check them out. On some of these visits she very briefly enters the nest,
but most of the time she just sticks her head in and then flies away.
Between the two of them, Ward and June delivered five meals in two hours,
but the prey just sat on the floor for several hours waiting for June to
come in and feed them. When she did enter, the wheezing was deafening as
the owlets jumped on her, bit her wings, and did just about everything
else they could think of the try to get her to hurry up with the feeding.
June, however, tolerates the rough treatment well and sometimes goes on
feeding them for as long as ten minutes. The increased amount of food
should allow the owlets' growth to accelerate even more rapidly. |
