Spencer
the owl finally convinced June that he was ready to come out of his shell
at 1:30 pm yesterday. June has kept him covered up since then, but he has
managed to make his presence known anyway. He was wheezing for food within
hours of the time June finished removing and eating the shell, and got his
wish when Ward delivered a nice fat frog a few hours later. June
immediately started tearing the frog into tiny pieces and feeding them to
Spencer who continued to wheeze throughout the ten-minute feeding session.
This sound clip was
recorded while he was eating the frog. It starts with the galloping sound
June makes to urge the owlets on and ends with one of Spencer's wheezes.
While the frog was more than enough to get Spencer through the day, Ward
made seven more deliveries through the rainy night and even brought in a
large spotted salamander after daylight this morning. He is shown here
passing it to June, who continues to block the cameras and prevent
Spencer's picture from being taken. The other egg is much louder this
morning and should hatch very soon. |
